The Blueprints

In my opinion, every toolbox needs a handful of pencils and a notebook. Not pens or markers but actually pencils. Most of things that I build I need to draw out on paper to figure out the engineering of how it’ll all work. The notebook that I keep in my toolbox is chalked full of past sketches, doodles, and projects that actually came into existence. I’ll draw out what I want it to look like as well as keep track of measurements or calculate measurements needed. I almost always end up drawing some part of the project.

Recently, I’ve been getting requests for the building plans that I used for the farmhouse table. Luckily, this is the one project that I didn’t just draw out but I actually used Keynote (Mac’s version of PowerPoint) to plan out my design. I’m not sure if I would really consider these building plans but it’s what I used (and continue to use on additional farmhouse tables) to guide my way. These jpegs are what became my blueprints. I hope that these will be helpful to others. Feel free to ask any questions that you might have.

Additionally, I created a .pdf of the cut list and shopping list for both a 96″x45″ table, matching bench, and extensions AND a 72″x41″ table, matching bench, and extensions ~~~~>

Tommy’s Farmhouse Table Cut List for a 96″x45″ table, matching bench, and extensions….as well as a 72″x41″ table, matching bench, and extensions.

  1. I absolutely love this table and as I’m finding that I enjoy DIY projects and am in need of a dining room table soon, I would love to give this the go. Could I have the keynote? And as a beginner as well, I would greatly appreciate any helpful hints!
    Thanks so much!

I need a table 96″ x 36-40″ (no wider than 40″ due the the space available) How easy would it be to make it narrower, and would I need to add any supports?

I love this table. I would love the blueprints to build the 72×42 table. I am a beginner so any helpful information you could send would be wonderful. Thank you!

    Tommy,
I am going to have a local wood worker build this table for my new home. I printed off all the directions and information you posted. As I scan through comments it looks as though I might need a keynote file. I have no idea what that is, but can you email (cajokisch@msn.com) that to me?
    Thanks,
    Courtney

    Tommy,

I am currently building this table. I too am using 4×4 legs, I wanted to know if, and how if done, you notched out the top of the 4×4. Did you set the 2×4 apron down inside of the 4×4 similar to ana whites with her 2×4 legs?? Also where are and how did you do all the screwing, I know you used a kreg jig, but where?

    Thank you

    Tommy,
My mom and I are going to build this table, but are wondering what kind and size of screws you used to put it together. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

    • I use 2.5″ Kreg Self-Tapping Screws. They are kindof expensive but well worth it. Since, I build a bunch of projects like this I bought a 20lb box off Amazon and it’s not quite as expensive. I used some standard 2.5″ deck screws one time and they worked ok.

Just to confirm as well……I use a Kreg jig to create pocket holes for just about every building project I’ve done.

      Thanks for the comment.

  12. Hi Tommy,

Thank you for posting all this wonderful information on the table! I want to build this table for our dining room and was hoping you could send over your Keynote file for me?
    danschreib(at)gmail.com
    Thanks again!

  13. Hello,Thanks for stopping by…….the table with these dimension can fit a lot of people. With our current chairs, we can fit 4 on each side and could fit two on each end….so there’s your 12. With the extensions in, you can fit another 4….so upwards of 16 can be done. To sit 12 adults comfortably, you’d probably want the table + extensions. I’ll email you the keynote file.Let me know if you other questions…..glad to help.

Hey Tommy,Echoing everyone else, I love all of your (and Ellie’s) projects and blog posts! I am going to make the Farmhouse table this weekend using your terrific blueprints. Unfortunately, the 96″ table isn’t going to work in our kitchen, so I’m going to drop to 72″. This will be my first such project, and I have a few “beginner” questions if you don’t mind! Is it as easy as taking 24″ off the applicable cuts?In your opinion, do you think the 8″ breadboards would be disproportionately wide relative to the 57″ tabletop planks? I was thinking of trying 6″ breadboards and 61″ planks…You and Ellie seem to have a good pulse on the lifestyle stores: is your walnut stain lighter/ darker than Pottery Barn’s Benchwright table (tough to tell from pictures)? You are an amazing artisan, if I can make mine look half as nice as yours, I’ll be thrilled! Thanks again for your blueprints, your blog and your help!!

Hi, I was wondering about how much this table ends up costing to build? Thanks,Heather

  16. Costs…..It all depends on the quality of the wood that you buy, screws, wood glue, etc.I only use kiln-dried pine from a local mill which gets a little pricey as well as pretty expensive Kreg screws. At a minimum you’ll probably be spending about $300.

  17. Billy B,I have a 72″ x 42″ table sitting in my garage as we speak that I’m about to deliver. I trimmed it down to 42″ wide for the same reason as you stated……but I think it looks great the way it is. If I can get around to it…..I’ll take some pictures of the finished product, blog about it, and you can check it out. Also, I updated my measurements when I built this one and I can pass those along to you. I think 2×6″s would look good but…..I build the tabletop to have an overhang on each end of 4″….if you were to use a 2×6″ that means you’d have 4″ hanging over and only 1.5″ over the 4×4″ legs…..vs a 2×8 would have 3.5 (the entire 4×4″).Pottery Barn Table: It’s hard to tell because it’s different wood types…..If I were to try and match the Pottery Barn table…..I would probably do 2-3 coats of “Special Walnut”.Thanks for all the encouraging comments.

  18. Billy B and Ryan,I published a new post on the 72″ table that I recently built and you can find it here; http://www.tommyandellie.com/Site/Home/Entries/2011/10/11_72%E2%80%9D_Table.htmlI included my cut list as a reference….I can also update the blueprints if that would be helpful….just let me know.Billy—I tried to take some good pictures of the breadboards so that you can see the proportion. As I was taking them, I decided that I really like the way it looks. What are your thoughts?

    • Hi Tommy,

I am having a hard time finding the plans for your 72″ x 42″ table. I keep clicking on your link to it and it says page not found. Do you also the plans for the smaller bench to go with it?

      Thanks!

How many chairs can fit around this table? We have a family of 12 and we are REALLY in need of a new table that has room for everyone. Could you send me your keynote file?! what do you charge for table designs? We live in Atlanta and can make it ourselves but not sure about the measurements for a 12 seater table. Thank you so much!
